More News... Leadwerks

Hey everyone, avarisclari here with more stuff of importance. We all know that there are plenty of engines on Linux, 99% of which (about) are open source. But there are little to no full editors. Leadwerks is working to change that.

From a consumer point of view, this is a good thing. It means that more games can be developed easier for Linux and have fewer bugs out right. If it's developed on the Platform its released for, you'll see some bugs much quicker than you would otherwise.

From a developer's point of view, it is also ideal. Having it available on a platform you plan on supporting means less time transferring data to the testing machine, making you able to test your changes faster and get the build out to testers. This also would make a fantastic addition to Linux and improve the already growing community.

I know some of you have already seen the Kickstarter and think that some of the rewards are pricey, but look at some. The 200 dollar tier is the same as buying the license for the engine outright from the main website. Even then, it's a discount after Kickstarter and Amazon fees. Please, support it. I know we have.

Small news... Greenlight

Time to step away from reviews to do a quick spotlight on some games that I feel should be greenlit. A few have been sitting there for quite awhile, and honestly deserve to be on Steam in my humble opinion. Listed in Alphabetical order, I give you Avarisclari's Greenlight Spotlight (Part 1 of N).

Delver:

Delver is a first person Rogue-lite dungeon crawler. Every dungeon is randomly generated, and you have permadeath, so be careful. The game is currently in alpha state and is being updated whenever the developer feels he added enough new features. So far I have not been disappointed, and this game definitely deserves the light of Steam.

Livalink:

Livalink, ah yes. Livalink is, currently, a survival FPS. You must fight of hordes of incoming creatures to survive as long as possible. The developer has stated to be looking into a campaign/story mode, but it is not guaranteed. The game itself is quite fun, and by putting it on Steam, we can give the developer a few more dollars to help fund future development.

Megabyte Punch:

Hold up. A Megaman meets Smashbrothers game? Where do I sign up?! Yes, Megabyte Punch is a sidescrolling beat'em up, featuring robo customization, bosses and a hub. Yes, the infamous Megaman hub where you enter all the areas from. But don't let that stop you, the game is fun, and will be on Linux soon as well. It is completely worth every cent.

Rjin the Specpyre in... Manor of the Damned:

Castlevania and Legend of Zelda collide to create this difficult RPG. In this game, you must explore a castle to unlock it's secrets, defeat the evil overlords and free the townspeople. Sounds simple right? Good luck.

The Real Texas:

So, depending on who you are, this is out of order. But still, most of us remember this game from when it was released. Some of us don't know it. But overall, it is a strange ambient game about wizards. No, not Harry Potter. Look just play it and see what I mean. Also, vote for it.

Zigfrak:

Explosions, explosions everywhere. Zigfrak is a deep space shootem up. You heard me. Personally, I feel like a pirate when I play, blowing up ships and taking everything they have. Heavy loot and deep stories abound in Zigfrak, and it definitely needs a place in everyone's library.

For those who care, the reason there are no links to the games sites with these is they are all on the Greenlight pages anyway and my goal is to get you to vote. So please, visit them and we will all be happier.

Big News... Thomas Was Alone

Thomas Was Alone tells the story of the world's first sentient AIs, and how they worked together to, well, not escape: Escape is a strong word. 'Emerge' might be better. 'Emerge' has an air of importance about it, while keeping the myriad plot twists and superhero origin stories you'll discover under wraps. We didn't even mention the bouncing. That'd be overkill.

Thomas Was Alone, wait, no he wasn't. He had a List. He liked to observe the world around him, but then decided it was too much trouble. So I'll do it for him.

Despite how it appears, this game is far from minimalistic. It has a deep story, challenging puzzles, and a lot of particles. I mean a LOT. Slowed down frames for me once in a while.

The story is about an AI with a sort of conscience. Each AI has different aspects of said conscience. Thomas is an observer, Chris is a loner, Claire is the hero, John is benevolent. They all work together to solve puzzles set up by programmers. Something goes wrong, yada yada, and we end up with the story. It likens to Douglas Adams a lot.

The game isn't particularly difficult, but that's not to say it is easy. There are rooms where you will solve them without any difficulty, and others where you'll want to quit because you can't figure them out. It was an interesting take on the puzzle platformer genre, as you don't actually solve puzzles, but use teamwork and various abilities to figure out how to reach the next portal.

As I mentioned earlier, I did have some frame rate issues. I'd like to go into more detail, but it only happened in puzzle rooms that would be spoilers to mention here. It is likely due to high particle count, slowing down my graphics card, so it's not a real issue.

Overall, Thomas Was Alone is a brilliant game with tons of replay value. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves serious humor, e.g. Hitchhikers Guide. The game gets a Grilled Cheese (with tomato). Please, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy.
